Sharp Turn Ahead for Optical Beams
2011-10-20 | A A A  【print】【close

In the recent Physical Review Letters article, Dr. Junjie Du, Xi Wang, Shichang Zou, Fuwan Gan and et al., from State Key Laboratory of Functional Materials for Informatics (Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences), have proposed a new type of structures to steer a beam based on the symmetry nature of the resonant mode of nanorods. The paper was highlighted as an Editors' Suggestion of Physical Review Letters Vol. 106, Issue 20 in 2011, with a Synopsis in Physics (physics.aps.org) that spotlights exceptional research published in the Physical Review journals. It is also reported in the physicsworld.com from IOP. SOI Research Group is devoted to the study of silicon photonics, focusing on photonic devices, electronics and photonics integration and optical interconnection. In this article, the single-layer array of nanoparticles can steer the optical beam to make a sharp turn. Namely, when the light beam is steered around a corner in a guide, the radius of curvature is less than the wavelength of the light, which seems to be impossible to avoid large losses at the corners in traditional optics. This work is expected to offers a whole new mechanism for the high integration chip-to-chip interconnect systems and on-chip architecture.
